Martha’s Vineyard Center for Education and Training (MVCET)
Executive Director

Martha’s Vineyard Center for Education and Training (MVCET) is the Island’s provider of access to professional certificates, licensure, and college courses. Founded in 2008, MVCET serves the Vineyard community with the educational opportunities that promote personal, professional, and economic success. Over the last year, MVCET has broadened its mission and grown in staffing and budget.  To move MVCET to the next stage, we are seeking an executive director with the vision, creativity, and organizational skills to continue, strengthen, and expand workforce and career preparation programs to benefit the Island’s diverse residents and the Island’s employers.  Working with a staff of 4, the executive director will need to be on-Island (in person) a minimum of three days a week.

Position: Exempt, full-time
Reports to: Board of Directors
Salary and benefits are competitive with similar on-Island positions.

Programming

  • Set program vision and determine implementation strategy
  • Develop and oversee training and education programming
  • Maintain and expand partnerships with local stakeholders and employers
  • Represent MVCET at in-person meetings in community (NAACP, Wampanaog Tribe, Brazilian meetings, town committees, business associations such as MV Builders Association and others)
  • Maintain and expand relationships with higher education institutions to make college credits accessible to Island residents including recent high school graduates
  • Draft, write and execute MOUs and Letters of Agreements with colleges, universities and state and private program agencies as needed
  • Ensure compliance with regulations of Department of Professional Licensure, OEMS, and/or other federal, state and local agencies
  • Initiate and oversee DPL accreditation when needed, manage reporting and compliance to these agencies
  • Build and manage relationships with local regional, state, and Federal agencies
  • Ensure that MVCET records are maintained and updated and accessible to staff  
  • With CFO, develop, review, and manage existing and new program budgets and support CFO with program narratives and budgets for grants
  • Serve on Community of Practice (CoP) for MassCEC and/or other agencies that require MVCET presence
  • Oversee program evaluation process and report to Board

Community Partnerships

  • Maintain and expand relationships and outreach with community stakeholders (MV Builders Assn, Chamber of Commerce, MVYPS, Charter School, MV Hospital, Hospice MV, Island Health Care, Councils on Aging, MV Community Services, Upper Cape Tech, MVA EMT, Nantucket Community School, etc.)
  • Organize and oversee regular meetings (2X per year) for Advisory Committees (trades, healthcare, business, education, renewable energy, marine/maritime) and Advisory Council (3X per year) for Community College Consortium

Finance/Fiduciary

  • Budget & Cash Flow Forecast
    • With CFO, review program budgets and organization’s annual budget
  • Donor Development
    • Connect with existing and new donors
    • Support board and volunteers with in-person meetings with donors
    • Represent at and help coordinate board-driven fundraising events

 Staff/Human Resources

  • Hire, supervise, and support the professional growth of all personnel
  • Maintain and update personnel handbooks, policies including setting policy for in person vs remote work
  • Oversee subcontractor hiring (such as marketing subcontractor and bookkeeper)
  • With Operations Manager, oversee hiring contracts, salary negotiations, health care coverage and eligibility, and insurance policies
  • Carry out mid-course and yearly performance evaluations for all staff
  • Review staff job descriptions and professional growth plans with each staff member
  • Hold weekly staff meetings and additional meetings as needed
  • Oversee Human Resources through skill building, team coaching, professional development; work with Operations Manager for timesheets and time-off requests.

Board

  • Develop and distribute board welcome kits, handbooks, policies and bylaws; maintain (with Operations Manager) document repository for staff and board access
  • Ensure and organize Annual Meeting, and provide CFO appropriate documentation to file annual report with state
  • Prepare agenda for all board meetings with board chair, review and submit minutes
  • Serve on Governance Committee to identify new board members
  • Serve on Strategic Planning Committee and participate in all other committee meetings
  • Meet regularly with chair with updates
  • Reach out to board members regularly (2-3 times per year) to identify needs

Hiring Requirements

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent in education, public administration, nonprofit management, adult education, organizational development, etc.
  • 8+ years experience leading or in a significant leadership role in a small, mission driven organization
  • Experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation
  • Experience building and maintaining a budget
  • Ability to work in-person on Martha’s Vineyard and familiarity with Vineyard community
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with community partners and stakeholders
  • Ability to make public presentations in multiple media
  • Exceptional written and verbal skills, excellent organizational skills
  • Strong computer literacy and willingness to learn new software programs/apps
  • Positive attitude, resilient, and flexible to accommodate changes in plans
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment
  • Team player comfortable with distributed leadership and collaboration and also
  • Self-directed, able to set and maintain goals

Preferred

  • Experience developing and delivering industry training programs for adult learners
  • Island resident familiar with our partners and stakeholders
  • Bilingual, or some fluency in Brazilian Portuguese
